Baldies win in first home game of 2018

The Baldies returned to the nest for the first time in 2018. It wouldn’t be a day at home without the 40 km per hour winds to welcome the Batemans Bay Boars back to Gungahlin.

After the improvements on the field last week, the Baldies were keen to show off to a home crowd.

The first half saw a tight battle which was reflected in the scoreline that was seesawing. Chris O’Connor opened the scoring for the Baldies. The Boars were taking no chances with the wind, ensuring that both their first-half tries were scored between the goal posts to ensure conversions were made.

Chris O’Connor led the attack, with a willingness to run the ball which opened up gaps allowing for free-flowing rugby and allowed the forwards to roll forward. The boys maintained good structure and took advantage of space seeing first-half tries from Luke Shaw and Sam Richards. Despite the long-range conversion efforts, the Baldies went into the halftime break up 15-14.

Knowing that the scoring opportunities were available in the game, the boys came out with a point to prove in the second half, or a desire to have a warm shower and a beer as the weather began to deteriorate. The points continued to come with Gareth Jones scoring his first try in Eagle’s colors in only his second game.

You may or may not have heard but to cap off one of his best games in Eagles colors, Luke Shaw finished the game with a hat-trick of tries. The boys cannot wait to hear about this for the rest of the season! With the massive 6 try effort from the boys, the Baldies finished the game 39-28 winners, securing an important bonus point.

A massive thank you to Greg Ward who kindly volunteered to take on the all-important role of refereeing the match. His efforts were greatly appreciated by both sides as he allowed for a fair and competitive game of rugby. Additional shout out to the girls who supported the boys and ran the line for the game.

Next week sees the Baldies back out bush taking on Boorowa at 3 pm.
